“Pisces” by artist Jason Hackenwerth is a 40-foot-tall double helix made of 10,000 balloons. Commissioned by the Edinburgh International Science Festival, the sculpture took Hackenwerth and his team six days to construct. It is on display at the National Museum of Scotland through April 14, 2013. There are many more photos of the sculpture on Flickr. Hackenwerth has more of his balloon sculptures on his site.

Decided to turn my LOVE of Big Bird into my costume this year.

I started planning this costume about a year ago and was certainly peeved to hear Romney talking smack about my love. Certainly there will be other big bird costumes out there this year but I have to say mine if pretty sweet and well worth all the hot glue burns.

Here are my final pieces for Pixelation of Place on view at the Pacific Art League in Palo Alto tomorrow Sept 12th-Dec 8th

Pixelation of Place serves as an artistic commentary on the urban development and technological advances which took place in Silicon Valley between 1954 -1999. My work will translate historical imagery through an optical re-envisioning designed to mimic current technologies. My artistic reinterpretation of two historic photographs were created square-by-square in hand colored illustration.

On the Ground, 2012 reinterprets Ken McLaughlin’s 1954 photograph of construction in the Silicon Valley. The image depicts early efforts during the conversion of a field into the Palo Alto Shopping Center on the Stanford Campus. The pixelation/pixilation of the image will convey a contemporary digitalization of this historic moment. The second piece, In the Air, 2012 is based on a 1999 aerial view of the Silicon Valley taken by the NASA Ames Research Center. I reduced the complexity and expansive depiction of the Silicon Valley by reducing the image using graphing to “pixilate” the landscape. Through my artistic methodology of pixelation/pixilation by graphing I am revising the historical meaning by symbolically blending technological advancements achieved in the Silicon Valley with the images.

Pixelation |ˌpiksəˈlā sh ən| noun divide (an image) into pixels, typically for display or storage in a digital format. ( be pixelated) (of an image on a computer screen or other display) be enlarged so far that the viewer sees the individual pixels that form the image, the enlargement having reached the point at which no further detail can be resolved.

Pixilation (from pixilated) is a stop motion technique where live actors are used as a frame-by-frame subject in an animated film, by repeatedly posing while one or more frame is taken and changing pose slightly before the next frame or frames.
